Advent Countdown Day 4

December 23, 2018

Take a moment to watch the following video from the Bible Project over the word Agape:

Now that you have a different understanding of the word agape or love,  read the following passages of scripture:

And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

Luke 6:31

he second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Mark 12:31

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Deuteronomy 6:5

You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

Leviticus 19:18

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.

‭‭1 John‬ ‭4:9‬ ‭

Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

1 John 4:11

As we see from the scriptures and the explanation from the Bible Project, agape is not necessarily a feeling like we often like to attribute to the word love but rather, it is an action. Agape is a choice. We often help others out of self motivation. We hope that we will receive something in return but agape love is no strings attached. It is loving others without expecting anything in return. When was the last time you selflessly loved another person?

As it states in the video, Jesus' life showed agape love for others. From the outside looking in, would you say that your life is a reflection of the heartbeat of God?

The purpose of our existence is to receive God's love that came to us through Jesus and give it back to others. Are you living to fulfill this purpose?
