Benefits of Oatmeal

Today we are talking about Avena Sativa…Oats! Oats are a hardy grain that is able to withstand poor soil conditions. It is high in fiber, manganese, molybdenum, phosphorus, protein, copper, biotin, Vitamin B1, and zinc. Oats are a low glycemic food that can help lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and the risk of heart disease. Oats can also enhance immune response and help stabilize blood sugar. Oats contain beta- glucan, a type of fiber that helps lower cholesterol levels. Studies have shown that in individuals with high cholesterol, just 3 g of soluble oat fiber per day typically lowers total cholesterol by 8-23%. This may not seem like much but each 1% drop translates to a 2% decrease in the risk of developing heart disease. Oats also contain antioxidants that help reduce cardiovascular disease. Add some Vitamin C by drinking a glass of orange juice to receive further antioxidant benefits from your oats. Here are some different ways that you can find oats: Oat groats, steel-cut, old-fashioned, oat flour, quick cooking, instant, and oat bran. Oats can be added to smoothies, granola, and baked goods. It can also be enjoyed hot or cold for breakfast and makes for a great pre-workout snack. *Just be careful of the sugar content if you buy the pre-packaged oatmeal packets
